Intro
Managing Passwords is a very important aspect in every field not just for developers . Generally most users use excel , text , pdf’s or Google Notes , to manage their passwords . These are not effective way to do it , as their is a very high risk for password theft .
As a developer we have to manage multiple accounts with tons of passwords and what 90% beginner users do is they use same passwords at multiple places which means that if their password got leaked then all their accounts are in danger .
All these problems are solved by PASSWORD MANAGERS
What are Password Managers ?
Password managers are the service providers which helps you to store your password securely . They monitor your passwords for leaks and attacks , allow you to change your passwords with a single click , tell you about the vulnerable passwords and much more .
In Password managers your account is secured with 2 keys : Master Password and Security Key .
Master Password is the password you create which only you know and Security key provided by password manager which is around 20 words long random key . To login to your account you must require these both keys .
How many types of Password managers are there ?
There are mainly 2 types of Password Managers :
Cloud Based Password Managers
Locally Stored Password Managers
Cloud Based Password Managers :
These are generally paid ones which requires a subscription to use but these also comes with some useful added benefits like : Password Monitoring , One click password change , password generator , autofill , etc… These Password Managers stores the passwords in their cloud storage and make them available to use anywhere you are .
Local Storage Based Password Managers :
These passwords manager are available for free to everyone and are generally open source . They store passwords in your Local Storage ( Hard Drive ) , they also works in the same way and are very secured .
Who should use Password Managers ?
Everyone should use Password Managers , they are very helpful . If you are at a very beginner stage or you can’t afford the price then you can use Google Password Manager or Local Storage Based Password Managers .
How to choose Password Manager ?
Both types of Password Managers comes with their Pros and Cons , you have to identify on your requirements , if you can afford then you should definitely go with Cloud Based Password Manager like 1Password . Or you should use GOOGLE PASSWORD MANAGER ( it’s free ).
is it worth it to spend in Password Managers ?
At beginning stage I don’t recommend using a paid Password Manager but if you can afford and are serious in your work and specially facing difficulties in managing your passwords then it’s worth to spend in Password Managers
Which Password Manager I use and why ?
I am currently using 1Password as it easy and offer great value at it’s price ( with some useful add-ons ) . But I think Google Password Manager is also a good option if you want a free value for money password manager .
Conclusion
There is always a debate between two password managers but I believe Cloud Based Password Managers are much worth it , because :
They store passwords in cloud so you don’t need to worry about your passwords getting lost
You don’t need to setup or configure them to suite your needs
Supports multiple platforms , so you can access them from your any device
Comes with a Leak Detector , so you can change vulnerable passwords
There are some cases like LastPass where there is thread of passwords getting leaked but now their are many password managers like : 1Password and Google Password Manager which are very secure and trusted by millions of users .
At last you can go with anyone but I will suggest you to use Google Password Manager if you want great value at 0 cost or go with 1Password which is also a great Value product at very affordable rates , they also provide free trial period . So you can try both and go for the one which you like the most .
